[edit] Introduction
Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) is a non-profit membership organisation for construction professionals based in Canada. One of the primary purposes of the organisation is to improve the system of standardising documentation for construction and related management activities.
[edit] History
The organisation was founded in 1953 with the intention of building a Canadian equivalent to the The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) in the United States. The goal of the founding members, which consisted of architects, engineers and specification writers, was to create better Canadian construction specifications, including a Building Construction Index in 1966 consisting of 16 divisions. In 1972, this document was incorporated into The Construction Specifications Institute’s Uniform Construction Index; it was later released as a joint project with CSI in 1978 as the MasterFormat.
In addition to collaborating on MasterFormat and supporting specifications, Construction Specifications Canada is focused on professionalism, collaboration, objectivity and relevance. The organisation belongs to the Canadian Construction Documents Committee (CCDC), which also includes representation from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Canada (ACEC), Canadian Construction Association (CCA), Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (Architecture Canada) and the Canadian Bar Association.
